About this deal

The narrative totally draws you in and the storyline keeps you guessing where life will take Laura and Kathleen. I thought Laura was a lot younger than she was (she is fourteen) because her thoughts about things and behaviours seem childish. Laura becomes a bit infatuated with the girl and her family and you can never blame her, considering her own family, who are lovely but poor and always working (she has no siblings). I have so many positive memories of reading her books as a child (and even rereading them as an adult) and I’m so excited to read a book set for young adults and one of a more adult and sensitive subject too. Wilson mi ha sempre stupito per la delicatezza con cui scriveva di certi argomenti in libri che erano per ragazzine intorno ai dieci, dodici anni.

I wish we could have found out what happened to all the other girls we encounter at the home, and the ending was a bit unrealistic, but Laura's story is a touching one nevertheless. With hard working parents who are proud of her achievements, she still dreams of a life like Nina’s.A very excellent written novel that focus on the 1960s as a time zone but talks about topics still relevant to today. At only 14, still very naive and incredibly homesick, Laura meets other girls her mother would label “Rough,” or “Tarts” or “Unsuitable,” who in fact are caring, and friendly. I enjoyed the story, I thought it was well-paced and one thing I’m extremely happy about is the time we got to spend with Laura before she finds out she is pregnant, as we really get to know her.

There are trigger warnings with this, which the author well prepares the reader for and it was a brilliant book. The first half of the book builds up a realistic picture of 1960s Britain and takes time to develop the characters, which really helps you to understand the decisions Laura makes over the course of the novel. But I don't think there's anything wrong with happy endings, especially in books for younger audiences. They were my safety blanket and I look back on them with fondness and comfort , and was eager to read one now I’m in my early 30s with the view of picking up from where I left off but my goodness this book is not a comfort blanket.
