a b c d Rich, Motoko; Dinitia Smith (April 27, 2006). "Publisher Withdraws How Opal Mehta Got Kissed". The New York Times . Retrieved May 31, 2009. Jessica Darling's It List series is very much middle grade. The writing is simple, the humor is aimed for younger readers, and the characters are not very mature. However, it totally works in this case. It's set in junior high and Jessica Darling and her friends are exactly how you would expect them to be. Megan McCafferty really captured the feel of junior high with this book. In recent months, some statements by Ali Scher and Chloe East hint at an imminent date on the release of ‘Jessica Darling’s It List 2’, and we will keep you updated as soon as we have a firm date. Left behind by her elementary school friends, who've moved on to the social elite of the "Cheer Team", Jessica forges an alliance with the founders of the rival "Spirit Squad". Counting on advice from her mega-popular older sister, Jessica navigates the treacherous waters of middle school society. I especially related to her lame attempt to weasel her way into the popular clique with an ill fated sleepover (shades of 5th grade summer!) at which she attempts to unite the rival factions.

Jessica Darling’s It List (2016) is a family-friendly movie that is suitable for all ages. There is no violence or sex in the movie, and the language is mild. The movie is based on a work of fiction and is not a true story. It was great getting to know pre-Clueless Crew Jessica. We get more insight into how distance grew between Jessica and Bridget. We also get to meet a young Hope, though she didn't play a huge part in the book. But, most importantly, we get to meet young Marcus. Here's one thing you should know about me, Marcus Flutie is my #1 BBF forever. He was my first, and will never be able to be replaced. New York Times bestselling author Megan McCafferty’s hilarious series opener will have you laughing, cringing, and cheering for Jessica Darling as she learns that being herself beats being popular, pretty & perfect any day. Jessica is a winning heroine, and as she stumbles and fumbles (and literally falls flat on her face), readers will laugh alongside her and, yes, cheer as she comes into her authentic self.”— Booklist

As with the first book in this series, I enjoyed seeing appearances of characters who'd go on to be major players in the original series about Jessica's high school years. This was a very cute read and I enjoyed Jessica's narration in here. I'm pretty sure that everyone had some of her thoughts while in junior high, trying to figure out where they belong. One of the parts that seemed pretty spot-on featured Jessica musing about how everyone but her seemed to know what the "important" stuff was for the junior high social scene and why didn't she automatically know too? I also loved the depiction of the relationship drama, with Jessica having a three-line exchange with a "friend's" boyfriend and that friend immediately thinking Jessica must have been flirting. By high school, Jessica Darling has pretty much comes to terms with her role in the social hierarchy and that she will never be the most popular girl in school. In middle school, Jessica's still trying to be what she's not. The series title, Jessica Darling's It List, is actually a bit misleading. In fact, this is Bethany's It List. Jessica's much older sister Bethany, in a rare instance of sisterly feeling, has decided to help Jessica avoid the curse of dorkdom by passing down the patented method for achieving popularity. Unsurprisingly, the It List does not work so well for Jessica. As Jessica attempts to abide by the ”IT List” she gets from Bethany, she journeys into the treacherous land of seventh grade along with her BFF, Bridget and a group of new friends Hope, Manda and Sara. And just like life NOTHING goes as planned for Jessica. This was my mantra going into the book. After the disaster that was It List 2 (though that could be because the book was drama, drama, drama), I had to remind myself not to focus on how much Marcus was in the book, thus a part of Jessica's life, before the series that I love. And I think I've finally accepted that the It List series is just an alternate universe Jessica Darling. After all, it very much seems to take place in current days, and Jess would have been in seventh grade in the mid-90s. SO THERE, ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. AHEM.

Girls can be mean! You can either join them OR avoid them. This is the world Jessica Darling must navigate. She is on a discovery quest, a quest to find out who she is, who her true friends are, and where she fits in. I love the original Jessica Darling books to a ridiculous and possibly unhealthy degree. This is a prequel to those books (which begin when she's in high school and follow her through to early adulthood) and our Jess is in middle school. To discuss: Jessica's mother and older sister put so much emphasis on her looks. Her mother never really apologizes in the film. We talked about why parents might be like that. But my daughter - who is kinda like Jessica - really felt that she would feel like I valued her less if I focussed more on her appearance. a b c Smith, Dinitia (April 27, 2006). "Novelist Says She Read Copied Books Several Times". The New York Times . Retrieved June 2, 2006. One of those signals is her friendship with Hope. It's clear that Hope and Jessica have a lot in common right from the beginning - but it's also clear that both of them have never experienced what true friendship is. They're cautious around each other, sizing each other up and taking time to really choose each other as friends. It's an amazing, gentle unfolding of a relationship that will define the Jessica that we know from the original books - and now we know why. This deep dive into the cinematic landscape cultivated my critical eye and provided me with a profound understanding of the nuances that make each film a unique work of art.
