About this deal

Thanks to the adjustable fan speed, digital timer and swing function, you can set this air conditioner exactly to your own wishes and needs. The good news is that retailers seem to have realised that demand for portable air con is rising and are responding with more supply and more choice.

The unit also helps to tackle the wet winter season by extracting up to 20 litres of excess moisture from your room per day. Let's be honest when we do get it we love the sun, but we can't help but moan that it's 'too hot to sleep' or fidget around the office as it slowly heats up to oven level. There's 10 speed settings to choose from and it's able to oscillate for evenly distributed air and can cool up to around 28 square metres. Chillmax Air Pure Chill sprays a fine mist that is then sent through the special filter and only uses evaporation and water to function.

Deze Princess 352900 Smart Airconditioner 9000 kan zowel koelen, ventileren, ontvochtigen als verwarmen. Two airflow settings allow you to choose what's best for you at the time, and you can control it all from the comfort of your seat with a remote control. This is a very powerful air conditioner, and if you leave it on for long enough it can make even large rooms feel very cold – but the heat hose can get awfully warm, so you want to make sure it's going out of the window so it doesn't undo the Chillflex's hard work. Alternatively, you can use the supplied universal window kit to seal the area around the hose outlet but this always looks a bit Heath Robinson-esque to my mind. Stay in charge with the easy-to-use display and remote control, you can also adjust the temperature and even engage sleep mode to ensure you get a restful nights sleep.

Pretty much all the air cons we’ve looked at or read about emit around 53dB of sound pressure and this one’s in the same ball park. The top-mounted electronic display is straightforward but you can always access its functions – cool, heat, dry and fan – using the remote control. I measured a minimum of 40 watts with the cooling off and the fan at its lowest, and a high of 66W with the fan up and the cooling pump running. In practice, the Princess Smart Air Cooler can’t properly chill a room on a hot day, but it does produce a genuine cooling effect – especially up close. Its digital interface and included remote control allow access to all main functions: temperature, fan speed and timer. It’s no match for the powerful cooling of an air conditioner, but then it uses just a fraction of the power. It’s also a great option for the bedside table since it’s really quiet and comes with a built-in night light.

The fan’s whine means I wouldn’t want it running overnight in my bedroom, but it did keep me cool while working on hot summer days.

But it makes much more sense on a cooler, as it allows you to pre-cool a space before you get there. The Apollo is more expensive than the Meacos but then it is marginally more powerful and equipped with that money-saving heat pump. Three different fan speeds allow you complete control over how little or how much cool air you want.

A portable air conditioning unit will simply move from room to room instead of having a device mounted to just one wall in the home. As is the case with every portable air con unit we’ve seen, it comes with a concertina tube to the expel the hot air it creates and, in this case, a special window kit designed ostensibly for sliding windows or doors.

I naturally selected its lowest temperature – 16˚C which is the norm with all air con systems – and the big boy fired up with a low growl as the compressor kicked in.
